RIS-PACS
RIS-PACS Solutions: A Digital Radiology Workflow From A to Z
A RIS-PACS solution combines two systems: RIS manages the Radiology department’s workflow, while PACS stores and displays images. When integrated, physicians and technologists work on a single data flow. For the basics, read What is PACS software?.
A typical RIS-PACS workflow
- Order: the clinician orders an exam; patient data comes from the HIS.
- Registration and scheduling: RIS receives the case and sends a worklist to the modality.
- Acquisition: the technologist scans and the device sends DICOM images to PACS.
- Reading: the radiologist opens the images in a DICOM viewer and writes the report.
- Approval and delivery: the report and images return to the ordering physician and sync into the medical record.
Benefits
- Less manual entry and fewer patient-data errors.
- Case status and turnaround tracking.
- Statistics on capacity, revenue and volume by modality.
- Easy extension to teleradiology and AI.
Deployment tips
- Standards: DICOM (images, worklist) and HL7/FHIR (administrative data, results).
- Access control and audit logs: protect patient data.
- Backup and recovery: a clear plan for large data volumes.
- Infrastructure model: on-premise, data center or cloud. See the detailed comparison.
